The piece is riddled with Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism, genocide denial, and outright false information.

On August 9, 2026, the Toronto Sun published an article by Ling Hui reporting on the Iran war and developments in Gaza. The article initially stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli military would not withdraw from the “disputed territory” until Hamas was disarmed.

CJPME media advocate Jeff Winch wrote to the Toronto Sun raising concerns about the characterization of Gaza as “disputed territory,” arguing that this innacurate wording implies that Gaza’s territorial status is unresolved and fails to reflect its status as occupied Palestinian territory.

Following CJPME’s complaint, the Toronto Sun amended the sentence. The reference to “disputed territory” was removed.

Altough a partial correction, this change removes the article’s misleading characterization of Gaza as “disputed territory.”

"To adhere to journalistic principles of impartiality and accuracy the article should be corrected to state that Gaza is “undisputed” Palestinian territory."

Referring to the occupied Palestinian territories as “what the UN global body calls them” reproduces precisely a form of anti-Palestinian erasure that fails to acknowledge Palestinians as an Indigenous people with a collective identity with rights in relation to occupied and historic Palestine. It is also misleading and inaccurate and merits a correction.

"Your use of the terms “Arab” and “Arab-Israeli,” instead of “Palestinian citizens of Israel” is puzzling. You mention throughout your reporting that these “Arabs” are descendants of Palestinians and self-identify as Palestinian citizens of Israel. Why then do you choose to dilute their identity by constantly referring to them as Arabs?"
