There is no mention of the outcry regarding Bill C-9's threats to civil liberties, recently articulated by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA). It's not just the CCLA either, more than 40 civil liberties groups urged against Bill C-9 over fears of criminalizing political dissent and violating Charter rights.

Unbalanced coverage of Bill C-9

The structural imbalance is evident in the article’s selective placement of viewpoints. The piece prominently features pro-Israel advocacy organizations, such as CIJA and B’nai Brith Canada, alongside quotes from Liberal MP Anthony Housefather. Meanwhile, a single quote from Independent Jewish Voices, raising concerns that the bill could curb legitimate protest and risk criminalizing dissent, is buried at the end.

"Slightly more context is needed on Bill C-9, given that a wide range of civil society groups have expressed serious concerns about this bill. Many multi faith, civil liberties and community organizations hold the view that, far from protecting citizens, it rather criminalizes protest, suppresses dissent, and expands police discretionary power at a time when over-policing, surveillance, and disproportionate targeting of racialized communities are already well-documented."

Your Piece on Bill C-9

The organizations you name are, of course, well within their rights to advocate for whatever legislation they see fit, and we readily acknowledge that their stance on Israel is irrelevant when they comment on matters unconnected to Israel and Palestine. In this case, however, their support for Israel is clearly relevant to their advocacy of Bill C-9 and so to omit any mention of it deprives the reader of the context required to fully understand the perspective that informs key points of the joint statement to which you refer.
