Article about the suffering of children in Gaza omits Palestinian death toll

"It is estimated that more than 25,000 women and children have been killed in Israel’s military assault on Gaza since Oct. 7. Gazans who are sheltering in Rafah have been the victims of a fatal ground and aerial military assault since Oct. 7, and to reduce the suffering they’ve experienced only to a potential ground assault in Rafah is demeaning."

News program needs to refrain from using metaphors to describe a failed attempt to stop a genocide

"Such words downplay Israel’s responsibility for the situation it has inflicted on Gazans, which has been ruled as a plausible genocide by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). These words also obfuscate the scale of Israel’s current military campaign in Gaza. Israel has killed civilians in Gaza with military tactics and equipment besides missiles and bombs. Palestinians in Gaza are being targeted and killed by airstrikes, gunshots, and tanks, as well as fatal conditions that have caused death from lack of medicine, starvation, dehydration, and malnutrition."

Article fails to raise skepticism about Israel's decision to bar Palestinians from accessing Al-Aqsa Mosque

"Last Ramadan, on April 4, 2023, Israeli police attacked worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. They brutally beat women, journalists, medics, and people with disabilities with metal chairs, batons, and rifles. Israeli forces attacked the mosque with tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber-coated bullets. In this period alone, they injured at least 153 Palestinians and raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque five times."

Ambiguous language in recent news segment undermines Israel's responsibility for Palestinian suffering

"This segment failed to cover the plethora of reasons for which Palestinians are dying from starvation: Israel’s deliberate targeting of civilians retrieving aid and its unilateral control of most of the air, land, and sea routes to Gaza. More than 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, not “hundreds of thousands.” Lastly, a “break in the fighting” implies a power symmetry between the two parties involved. Further, it obfuscates Israel’s highly disproportionate share of the killing since Oct. 7. The host could have, instead, said that Palestinians sheltering in Rafah can only wait for a 'ceasefire' or 'an end to Israel’s military campaign'."

CBC News issues correction following our insistent demands

On March 11, CJPME learned that CBC News made corrections to an article following two CJPME complaints. In an article about the Canadian government’s response to Israel’s assault on Gaza, Raffy Boudjikanian initially wrote the following:

Months of violence have followed the events of Oct. 7, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killed approximately 1,200 people, and took roughly 250 others hostage, according to Israeli accounts. Since then, Israeli strikes have killed approximately 29,000 people, according to Gaza’s Hamas-led health authority.

On March 1, CJPME wrote to the journalist and the standards editor at CBC, saying that the term “Israeli strikes” obfuscates the scale of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Palestinians are being killed by airstrikes, gunshots, and tanks, as well as fatal conditions that have caused death from lack of medicine, starvation, dehydration, and malnutrition. After a week without a response, CJPME sent a follow-up email demanding an immediate correction. The sentence in question now reads:

Since then, the Israeli campaign has killed approximately 29,000 people, according to Gaza’s Hamas-led health authority.

We appreciate CBC updating this article for clarity.

Thank you for shedding light on the struggles of Palestinian families and prioritizing their perspectives

"Your article sheds light on the difficulties of family members from Gaza currently stranded in Egypt, facing the imminent expiration of their legal status, dwindling finances, and silence from the Canadian government despite their families' investment in the temporary visa program. Your coverage underscores the uncertainty and frustration faced by numerous families concerning their acceptance into the program and the lengthy processing times."

Article fails to touch on why Palestinians fear being driven out of their homeland

Given that Israel controls all air, water, and land routes into Gaza, water, food, medicine, and other essentials are incredibly limited, leaving Palestinians dehydrated, starving, and untreated for both critical injuries and preexisting conditions. These are the desperate conditions that Israel has unilaterally created, and that Palestinians are attempting to escape. Please consider updating your article accordingly and incorporating a discussion of these realities in future reporting.

Article insinuates that 30,000 palestinians have been killed from just "Israeli strikes"

When comparing this death toll to the 151 Palestinians who were killed in 2022, it becomes clear that Israel’s actions in Gaza are not isolated from their actions in the occupied West Bank. This loss of life should be regularly reported in articles related to Israel’s current military campaign.
