The Media Accountability Project

Pages tagged "Montréal Gazette"

Why did Montréal Gazette change the headline for same article published in other media outlets?

"The examples demonstrate two things: 1. his anti-Israel stance, which is conflated with antisemitism, and 2. that the media wants to make him guilty by association when he should not bear the responsibility for the people invited to panels where he gave talks."

Article fails to reference & add context about the genocide unfolding in Gaza

"Writing “the war between Israel and Hamas” and “since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct.7” is not only an insufficient piece of context, but it’s also not a fair and accurate way to describe the genocide in Gaza."

Gazette article about SPHR's protest is a mouthpiece for pro-Israel propaganda

This article is a blatant example of the type of biased reporting about protests that we strongly oppose. Before Palestinian advocates are allowed to provide their motivations for a protest or blockade, media outlets mention how CIJA and other pro-Israel lobby groups feel about these protests.

Article absolves Israel of committing genocide in Gaza

"While you specify that Hamas launched an attack on Israel on Oct. 7, you simply state that there was a subsequent “Israel-Gaza War.” What about Israel’s brutal, largely one-sided attack on Palestinians in Gaza?"

Thanks for thoroughly reporting on Jews who are in support of Palestine's liberation

"This article is incredibly refreshing, for it reveals the deep support that exists for a Free Palestine within the Jewish community and, thus, counteracts the antisemitic trope that all Jews are or should be staunch supporters of Israel."

Article is a mouthpiece for the Jewish community

Overall, your article fails to provide any critical analysis of the arguments from the letter of the Jewish community leaders or the written statement from the Centre for Jewish and Israel Affairs (CIJA). This makes your article come across as very obsequious and one-dimensional. Beyond this major journalistic failure, there are many other shortcomings of the article.

Re: “Montreal library moves children's books over author's Israel comments”

"For her children’s books to be removed from the public shelves of a local Jewish Public Library on grounds of antisemitism is yet another disappointing example of the career costs of expressing Palestinian solidarity. I hope this decision will be reversed, as any child has likely left the library more informed, conscious, and accepting after reading one of her books."

Montréal Gazette made a change following a CJPME letter

On January 31, Montréal Gazette made a change following a CJPME letter.

The Montréal Gazette opinion article by Allison Hanes was about Islamophobia and, largely, different types of hate.

While Hanes mentioned that “1,200 [Israeli civilians] were murdered [on Oct. 7],” she omitted to mention the number of Palestinian casualties since October 7.

Following CJPME’s letter, Hanes added that “more than 26, 000 Palestinians have been killed.”

Failure to mention the Palestinian casualties since Oct. 7

"While you give the number of Israeli casualties, you fail to mention the number of Palestinian casualties. According to OCHA, between October 7, 2023, and January 30, 2024, at 12:00, at least 26,751 Palestinians were killed in Gaza, and 65,636 Palestinians were injured."

Poorly written article is a mouthpiece for Mayor Levi's pro-Israel bias

"By excluding any information that may have given merit to some of the criticism made against Mayor Levi, readers are given an incomplete story that favours Israel. Please link readers to Levi’s Facebook profile and include the mayor’s most recent policy proposals to make your coverage of this issue more balanced."
