Thank you for your balanced coverage of one of the largest pro-Palestinian protests in Ottawa

"I particularly commend your decision to center the lived experiences and concerns of demonstrators, including their chants, symbolism, and expressions of grief and outrage at the ongoing genocide and forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza. By including direct quotes and outlining their motivations, you offered readers an authentic understanding of why so many Canadians are demanding that Palestine be treated as a core election issue. This is critical journalism that resists the silencing of Palestinian narratives."

Concerns about recent article on uOttawa antisemitism advisor

"The reality is that most readers will not even make it that far into the article, such that you’ve effectively downplayed the very backlash this article is supposedly concerned with while amplifying the defense. The result is an article that is deeply unbalanced and fails to fairly report on its subject."

Thanks for reporting on pro-Palestinian petition signed by Ottawa health-care workers

"I was, therefore, pleasantly surprised when I read your article that covered the open letter signed by almost 400 healthcare workers questioning their hospitals’ decision to withdraw from Capital Pride events. Your article not only gave voice to some of them but highlighted the double standard of the fact that hospitals have been silent on the genocide in Gaza but decided to take a stance on the Capital Pride events."

Correction required regarding Canadian weapons exports to Israel

"According to Ms. Paling's findings, Canadian manufacturers could be exporting nearly $95 million more in military goods to Israel by the end of 2025, based on active permits currently held by Canadian companies. These permits, which total $107.7 million, include a range of controlled goods that could potentially be used in the current Israeli military siege on Gaza. It is also worth noting that several Canadian companies involved in military exports to Israel have sought to keep details of their export permits confidential through court actions."

Surprising that your article does not acknowledge the active participation of Pride committees in supporting Israel’s actions in Gaza through their sponsorships

"The article’s focus on the reactions of Ottawa’s Jewish community without mention of the broader context of the situation in Gaza, where the population is violently being assaulted and going through a genocide at the hands of the Israeli state, is not fair. This context is crucial to understanding the motivations behind pro-Palestinian support at Pride events. The now ten-month genocide in the Gaza Strip, marked by a devastating blockade and frequent military assaults, has galvanized many within the LGBTQ+ community to stand in solidarity with Palestinians."

Complain to Ottawa Citizen for failing to properly label article about the possibility of a regional war in the Middle East

Poor coverage - Media outlet to be critiqued

A CJPME Media Researcher has launched a media alert for the following article. Please submit a quick response to the media, even if it’s just a sentence or two:

Title of Piece: Ehsanullah Amiri: "How Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah, assassination of key Hamas leader in Iran could escalate"

Media Outlet: Ottawa Citizen

Comments of the CJPME Media Researcher:
(Note: Please do not copy and paste the material below as the content to your message to the media - put all comments in your own words):
Ehsanullah Amiri’s article in Ottawa Citizen’s “News” category is undoubtedly a better fit for “Opinion.” Amiri’s article is an interview with Dr. Casey Babb, a senior fellow with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa and an International fellow with the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, where he asserts his own thoughts on the possibility of a regional war following Israel’s assassinations of Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, and Hamas’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh. Please email Ehsanullah Amiri, as well as the editor-in-chief and deputy editor at Ottawa Citizen, to inform them of this oversight and other issues with this article.

  • While Amiri clarifies that the interview has been edited and condensed for clarity and length, he reports a lot of biased, weighted language, like “terrorists,” “genocidal terrorists,” and “terrorist organizations,” while the article is nonetheless labeled as “news.” It is impossible to know if these inflammatory words are the exact phrasing used by the interviewee. Regardless, given that Babb is essentially given a platform to express his opinions at length without skepticism by the journalist, much like an op-ed, this article should be marked as Opinion.
  • Amiri does not question the claim that the attack in Golan Heights killed 12 “Israeli civilians” and that it was a “terrorist attack.” The reality is other: the 12 children who were killed are Syrian Druze and do not have and refuse to get Israeli citizenship, and Hezbollah has denied being behind this attack. All of this is essential context.
  • Amiri reports Babb’s inflammatory and dehumanizing language that Hamas are “the worst people on the planet.”
  • Overall, the article should not be labeled as “news,” but as opinion, especially when the interviewee is not neutral and objective regarding the possible escalation in the region, nor are his comments balanced with other insights.

Blaff's article on IPC report is misleading and misrepresentative

"Blaff’s reporting seems intentionally irresponsible and deceptive.  I insist that Blaff and the Ottawa Citizen update the article to give a more accurate portrayal of the contents of the IPC’s May projection, notably “acute food insecurity” in Gaza.  If not, I may be required to take this issue to the National Newsmedia Council."

Re: "Hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians did not start on Oct. 7"

Israel’s continued violence and oppression against the Palestinian people only deepens the rift, and makes true justice ever more elusive.  While it may be difficult for Palestinians and Israelis to see beyond their immediate grievances, other voices – including Canada – must be better at bringing justice and reason to bear.

Ottawa Citizen re-categorizes article from News to Opinion following CJPME complaint

On June 12, 2024, the Ottawa Citizen’s Editor-in-Chief informed CJPME that it would recategorize an inflammatory article by Canada’s Former Ambassador to Israel that questioned “what is a civilian?”

CJPME had written to the paper making the request, as well as launching an alert about the same article that appeared in the National Post. Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, the National Post stands by the article that promotes genocidal rhetoric.

Op-ed marked as "news"

Given that this is a piece essentially advocating against protections for civilians in Gaza, an extremist position, I would urge Ottawa Citizen to clarify this is an op-ed. If not, this article constitutes numerous grave violations of journalistic standards.
