I feel like your language around how each side, Hamas and Israel, are responding the UNSC ceasefire resolution is also unfair.  Your selective description of Hamas’ response chooses to dehumanize Palestinians (“necessary sacrifices”), while your description of Israel’s response makes them sound like measured strategists.

In the same vein, you consistently refer to Palestinian captives who are being “treated” by Israel as “patients.” If one of the civilians or soldiers taken captive by Hamas on Oct. 7 were receiving treatment, shackled, and blindfolded on a bed in a tent in Gaza, I am certain that AP would refer to this individual as a hostage, not a patient.

"A more balanced account would reflect these stark differences in perspective and mention the decades of Israeli military occupation of Palestine. It would only require a brief sentence to this effect to balance your coverage meaningfully."

Important context is excluded, including Israel striking, murdering and displacing Palestinians in Rafah refugee camps, the IDF’s recent slaughter of Palestinians in the Nuseirat refugee camp, and the Al-Shifa hospital massacres that happened in November and in March where Caroline El-Khalidy worked.  

"The article’s subheading does not mention that the new strikes were from Israel. CJPME believes there should be absolute clarity for audience members to know who is striking whom in a conflict zone."

While a journalist may not want to include all of these details, you must at least acknowledge this nuance in some fashion. At a minimum, like others covering the story, you should have linked to her statement.

Unlike other media outlets in Canada whose Editorial Boards have consistently supported genocide, the Toronto Star Editorial team wrote a principled column about Rafah. While imperfect, it stands in stark contrast to the fanatical writings of outlets like the Globe and Mail or Postmedia's publications.
