Re: "Read the ruling any way you want, we’ve allowed antisemitism to be normalized"
"Rosie Dimanno’s endorsement of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, without acknowledging its controversial nature, dangerously encourages the idea that criticism of Israel is equivalent to antisemitism. This is an approach that has been used by many to shut down conversations about Palestinians and their suffering – perpetuating anti-Palestinian racism."
Read moreAP article published on Toronto Star's website fails to meet basic journalism standards
"I’ve consistently provided The Associated Press with this type of feedback since January 2024. I’ve emailed a total of 75 letters to a range of journalists and editors at AP. In all of these letters, I’ve laid out well-researched and thorough arguments explaining how they’ve violated basic journalistic standards, as well as recommended edits. Despite this consistent feedback, The Associated Press has not replied to a single one of my letters. This lack of responsiveness and accountability demonstrates that AP has closed itself off to meaningful dialogue with its readers."
Read moreOne-sided reporting of U of T injunction against pro-Palestine encampment by the Toronto Star
"The article disproportionately favors the judge of the ruling against the encampment at U of T, Markus Koehnen, as you significantly give more space for him to articulate his views, with his quotes prominently featured. In contrast, pro-Palestine perspectives are confined to just three paragraphs. It is irresponsible to publish an article about the pro-Palestine encampment while burying the perspectives of the proponents of the encampment. More students involved in the encampment could and should have been contacted and quoted."
Read moreThank you Toronto Star for excellent piece on Islamophobia
"As rightly pointed out by Amira Elghawaby, the federal government’s Special Representative on Combating Islamophobia, this incident is a blatant attempt to portray Canadian Muslims and communal prayer as threatening and dangerous. Such content is undeniably Islamophobic and contributes to the growing climate of fear and hostility towards the Muslim community in Canada."
Read moreThank you for highlighting our institutions' refusal to acknowledge APR
You write that “our society frowns upon the usage of the word Palestine”, and I couldn’t agree with you more. Unfortunately, mainstream media outlets in Canada have a history of being reluctant to use the word Palestine. Some never use the word at all, opting instead to only talk about “Palestinians” while excluding their land.

To make your article less one-sided, I ask you to add context about Gaza and the West Bank and add voices from the Pro-Palestinian protesters so that their intentions are clearly stated and not further mischaracterized.

I will also point out that your paragraph, “Israel imposed a complete siege on the territory at the start of the war and has only gradually eased it under pressure from Washington. The war has destroyed most of Gaza’s capacity to produce its own food,” is also racist and selective.
Read moreWhy is AP refusing to use the word Palestine in their reporting?
Refusing to acknowledge Palestine and its people not only perpetuates historical inaccuracies but also undermines the rights and aspirations of millions of Palestinians. It is imperative that the media recognize Palestine as a legitimate entity, acknowledging the diverse heritage and identity of the Palestinian people.
Read morePalestinian tied to an Israeli Jeep is used as a "human shield", not only "shot and wounded"
"Clear and accurate reporting is crucial, especially when addressing violations of international humanitarian law. I, therefore, immediately urge you to change the headline to: "A wounded Palestinian was used as a human shield, beaten, and tied to an Israeli army jeep." It is essential to accurately reflect this information as it significantly shapes readers’ perceptions of the story, even if they do not read the entire article."
Read moreTeotonio's article on TDSB vote failed her readers
"The job of a journalist is not just to quote what people say, but to evaluate what they say in light of objective truth. In this case, Teotonio needed to grapple with the question, “Does raising concerns about one type of discrimination automatically create another type of discrimination.” Or more specifically in this case, is there anything in the concern about APR which is justified? Teotonio failed in her obligation to readers."
