"Palestinian perspectives are often deliberately silenced and excluded from Canadian public discourse, and the inclusion of voices like Hejazi is a positive start to educating the Canadian public about Palestinian culture and art. In his news article “Illusions of Separation offers immersive experience, food for thought at Cultural Centre,” I appreciate that Brock Weir interviewed Palestinian-Canadian artist Samar Hejazi about her artwork and exhibition Illusions of Separation. I am particularly pleased that Weir adequately quotes Hejazi, sharing her insightful views about Palestinian art, history, ancestry, and identity. Palestinian perspectives are often deliberately silenced and excluded from Canadian public discourse, and the inclusion of voices like Hejazi is a positive start to educating the Canadian public about Palestinian culture and art. Highlighting Hejazi’s art and sharing her perspective helps valorize the experiences of Palestinian-Canadians. I hope to see Palestinian culture, art, and identity more frequently profiled in The Auroran and broader Canadian media and news.
