One-sided coverage in The Globe and Mail about MPP's tweet supporting Palestinian hunger striker

The article does not mention the context of Israel’s abusive practices against Palestinians. Most of the time that Palestinian hunger striker Khader Adnan spent in prison was in administrative detention, a widespread practice in which Israel holds Palestinian detainees indefinitely without charge or trial. Adnan was not convicted or charged with terrorism, and his death was widely condemned by human rights groups and UN experts.

Recently elected MPP Sarah Jama is under fire for retweeting Noura Erakat, who mourned the recent death of Khader Adnan. Adnan died during a hunger strike while in Israeli military custody. While Laura Stone’s article in Globe and Mail quotes many pro-Israel voices against Jama, it only quotes one pro-Palestinian voice (CJPME), and no Palestinians themselves.

The article does not mention the context of Israel’s abusive practices against Palestinians. Most of the time Adnan spent in prison was in administrative detention, a widespread practice in which Israel holds Palestinian detainees indefinitely without charge or trial. Adnan was not convicted or charged with terrorism.

Further, his death has been widely condemned by UN experts and human rights groups, and the statement that Jama tweeted is consistent with the position of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and many Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations. The article omits these pertinent facts, which gives the false impression that Jama’s retweet was extreme or fringe.
