Re: “Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama’s retweet condemned by party”

"Grant LaFleche’s article titled “Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama’s retweet condemned by party” misleads readers and omits critical context to understanding the nature of Jama’s tweets. Sarah Jama has publically supported Palestinian rights and the rights of all oppressed communities making her the target of a smear campaign. Jama retweeted the news of the death of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian prisoner who died as a result of being on a hunger strike for 90 days and of medical negligence by Israeli authorities."

Grant LaFleche’s article titled “Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama’s retweet condemned by party” misleads readers and omits critical context to understanding the nature of Jama’s tweets. Sarah Jama has publically supported Palestinian rights and the rights of all oppressed communities making her the target of a smear campaign. Jama retweeted the news of the death of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian prisoner who died as a result of being on a hunger strike for 90 days and of medical negligence by Israeli authorities. Hunger strikes are a practice used by Palestinian prisoners as a form of non-violent protest against Israel’s practice of administrative detention – incarceration without trial or charge mostly used against youth for resisting occupation. While it is true that Adnan was affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, he was not tried or convicted of anything. LaFleche failed to mention that Adnan’s death was widely condemned by human rights groups and UN experts, giving the false impression of a controversy.
