False assertion that Palestinian actions caused the latest escalation in violence by Reuters

"Accuracy is imperative; your article reports that the violence is a result of the four Israeli civilians killed in a Hamas ambush, whereas the violence started earlier, specifically with Israel’s assault on Jenin on the 19th of June"

Dear Mr. Lewis, Ms. Pamuk, Mr. Bartlett and Mr. Moss,

I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express concerns regarding an article published in Saltwire dated June 28, 2023 titled “Blinken says West Bank unrest an impediment for Israel’s normalization hopes”.

While it is important that your audience be made aware of the ongoing violence in the West Bank, accuracy is imperative; your article reports that the violence is a result of the four Israeli civilians killed in a Hamas ambush, whereas the violence started earlier, specifically with Israel’s assault on Jenin on the 19th of June. Seven Palestinians were killed and 91 wounded. Excluding this information implies that Palestinians actions were the cause of the latest escalation, when the opposite is true.

Your coverage should include this essential context and corrections in order to provide readers with an accurate view of the situation. I trust that these changes will be incorporated into future reporting.

Should you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me at 438-380-5410.

Sincerely,

Mohamed Khalaf
