"While Gwynne Dyer goes in depth analyzing Israel’s “democracy” and the reasons behind the protests against the judicial reforms, I would posit that Israel is not, and never was a democracy in the first place."

While Gwynne Dyer goes in depth analyzing Israel’s “democracy” and the reasons behind the protests against the judicial reforms, I would posit that Israel is not, and never was a democracy in the first place.
More than 5 million Palestinians live under Israeli rule in the West Bank and Gaza. They do not have Israeli citizenship, have no say in electing those who rule over them in what is now widely accepted as an apartheid regime. Israel is as much a democracy as apartheid South Africa was; one group ruling over another, limiting their freedom of movement, subjecting them to deadly daily military raids and severely limiting their basic rights.
If Israel is to be called a democracy, it is a selective democracy at best, providing representation only to those who are of Jewish descent, treating non-jewish citizens (Palestinian Israelis) as second-class citizens and subjecting the rest to a military apartheid system of governance. Where then is this so-called glowing beacon of democracy?
