RE: “Trudeau should ‘speak out more loudly’ against Israel’s judicial reforms, says former ambassador", Neil Moss
I am writing to express my appreciation for the article by Neil Moss. His article provided a variety of perspectives on why PM Trudeau should be speaking out more loudly against Israel’s judicial reforms. The notion expressed by David Matas and Aurel Braun, that Israel can resolve its own internal disputes without external pressure, was not supported by the majority of those interviewed for Mr. Moss’ article.
In addition to those interviewed for the article, over 800 Jewish scholars across North America, Europe and Israel have signed a letter calling attention to the direct link between Israel’s judicial reform and its impact on the human rights of Palestinians living in the illegally occupied Palestinian territory, calling it a regime of apartheid. One of the signatories described this time as a watershed moment in how Israel’s occupation is viewed and also how American Jews view Israel.
In a July 23 address at the United Nations, PM Trudeau spoke at length about the Rule of Law and that democracy, freedom, equality and respect for human rights must be championed by all nations. He gave our support for the Ukraine as a recent example of Canada ‘acting on its values’. As I understand it, the rule of law requires that lawyers and judges operate free of interference by individuals and groups. If we are truly a country that espouses the values of democracy, equality and human rights for all and uphold the Rule of Law then PM Trudeau needs to put his words into action. Silence, encouragement and concern are not enough.
