Henry Srebrnik’s article, “American media criticize Israeli government,” was encouraging to read. As someone who served as a human rights observer in the occupied Palestinian territory in 2014, I have been disappointed in the Canadian government’s unfaltering support of the Israeli government and the coverage in Canadian media.

A recent public opinion poll by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East shows that the tide is indeed turning in terms of Canadians opinion of Israel. Only a small minority viewed Israel as “a vibrant democracy.A much larger number saw Israel as “a state with segregation similar to apartheid.

The Canadian media has a crucial role in helping to provide critiques of our government’s unwavering declaration of Israel as a friend and ally; as well as critiques of the Israeli government’s extreme right wing policies. Israel is pursuing policies that the UN and a number of human rights organizations have named as violating both international and humanitarian law.  I look forward to the day when a similar article is written by Mr. Srebrnik with the title Canadian media criticize the Israeli government.”
