Thanks for balanced article about the impact of the Oslo Accords thirty years later

"Your headline clearly captures the reality for both Palestinians and Israeli citizens but especially for Palestinians who seek not only peace but also justice. We appreciated that you named both the nationalist government in Israel and the leadership of the Palestinian Authority as factors contributing to the bleak outlook."

Dear Mr. Moss, Mr. Bartlett and Mr. Mackenzie,

I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to say thank you for the article titled “Thirty years after Oslo, bleak outlook for Israel Palestinian peace” that was published online by Saltwire on September 13, 2023.

Your headline clearly captures the reality for both Palestinians and Israeli citizens but especially for Palestinians who seek not only peace but also justice. We appreciated that you named both the nationalist government in Israel and the leadership of the Palestinian Authority as factors contributing to the bleak outlook.

Your statement by Yossi Beilin also revealed that “the accords’ failure to bring peace came about because successive Israeli governments preferred to turn what was a temporary truce into a permanent status quo,” which really speaks to the crux of the issue. The growing number of settler attacks, the rapid expansion of settlements, the “hundreds” of Palestinians injured or killed in the past year demonstrate the true intent of the Israeli government. What is apparent from your article is that for Palestinians, not only is peace not likely; but neither is the prospect of justice or a state of their own.

We encourage Reuters and Saltwire to continue to provide Canadian readers with balanced and factual reporting that includes a diverse range of Palestinian and Israeli voices and perspectives.

If you wish to discuss this further, please contact me at 250-469-4468.

Sincerely,

Debbie Hubbard
