Failure to give Islamophobia as much attention as antisemitism

"I understand that journalists choose the scope of their piece. What concerns me is that you do include Islamophobia in the scope of your article, but fail to give it near as much attention as antisemitism. I think it is important, at the very least, we hear from people who can speak about Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism."

Dear Peter Zimonjic and Nancy Waugh,

I’m writing with concern about your recent article, “Justice committee to study antisemitism, Islamophobia on and off university campuses.

As you note in your piece, the original motion was amended to include a study of Islamophobia. Despite this, your article fails to quote or interview anyone who can speak to this aspect of the motion. Instead, we only hear from Anthony Housefather and Ed Fast. It is unfortunate that such a sensitive article would not be more balanced.

I understand that journalists choose the scope of their piece. What concerns me is that you do include Islamophobia in the scope of your article, but fail to give it near as much attention as antisemitism. I think it is important, at the very least, we hear from people who can speak about Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism.

Sincerely,

Jason Toney
