Harris asks an important question: who can stop Netanyahu? for which he provides an answer: the Israeli people. I, however, have to disagree with him. When it comes to Israel, it's important to remember that far-right politics permeates the structure of Israeli society. Netanyahu represents Israeli society. Recent polls have shown that most rightists and religious Zionists prioritize "destroying Hamas" over the return of the hostages. As during the 2016 Clinton-Trump presidential election, many believed or refused to believe that the American people would vote for Trump. Yet, Trump got elected. This should not have come as such a surprise, because he ultimately represents American society, like it or not. We cannot continue to believe that elected officials, such as Netanyahu, don’t speak in their people’s name. As long as we do, we intentionally put on blinders to refuse to see Israel for what it is.
