Dear Nathan Vanderklippe,
I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East to express a small concern regarding a recent article titled “Israel launches retaliatory strike on Iran: reports,” published on April 17 in Globe and Mail.
At the beginning of your article, you write:
The Friday morning attack came after the unprecedented Iranian strike this past weekend that launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel, synchronized to hit around 2 a.m. Sunday.
On April 1, an Israeli missile demolished an Iranian Embassy in Syria, killing approximately 16 people. Shortly after Israel’s offensive attack, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations released a statement that Iran “reserves its legitimate and inherent right under international law and the United Nations Charter to take a decisive response to such reprehensible acts.”
Unfortunately, this article does not make it clear that Iran’s attack on Israel on April 13 was in response to an initial Israeli attack. The article omits any information regarding the attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria on April 1. Please provide this critical context so as not to depict Iran’s attack on Israel as completely unprovoked.
I hope you will consider making these edits promptly, as it is a question of exemplifying and maintaining your rigorous journalistic standards.
Sincerely,
Rose Mardikian,
Media Analyst, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East
