Breakenridge asks us to think long and hard about how we’d feel if the other side was encamping at universities asking for closer ties with Israel. Well, I did not have to think about it long, and hard to conclude that his reasoning does not make any sense. First, it would be embarrassing to see people encamping for closer ties with Israel when it would mean that they are encouraging Israel’s colonization of Palestinian land and the genocide of Palestinians. Second, I think that if people supporting Israel decided to camp on university campuses, it would, even more, incentivize people to join pro-Palestine encampments and not leave until their demands are met. So, universities allowing encampments on campus is not about them “rejecting ultimatums” or “rewarding tactics” as Breakenridge presents it, it’s about students exercising their protected right of protest and students and universities complying with their moral obligation of stopping genocide.
