Factual error during May 28 broadcast of Up to Speed

"During the segment on Rafah, the host stated that “1,200 Israeli civilians” were killed by Hamas on October 7. This is, of course, not true. According to social security data, 695 Israeli civilians were killed, as well as 373 security forces and 71 foreigners."

Dear Nancy Waugh, Emily Brass,

I’m writing to alert you to a factual error during the May 28, 2024, episode of Up to Speed with guest host Emily Brass.

During the segment on Rafah, the host stated that “1,200 Israeli civilians” were killed by Hamas on October 7. This is, of course, not true. According to social security data, 695 Israeli civilians were killed, as well as 373 security forces and 71 foreigners.

While I understand CBC typically reports these figures correctly elsewhere, it stands to reason that such a glaring error ought to be corrected on a forthcoming episode of this particular show to increase the likelihood that those listeners would hear the corrected figure.

Sincerely,

Jason Toney
