Factual error: Albanese's lecture at McGill was not canceled; it was relocated!

"Several tweets about the event, along with a statement from Law Students for Palestine at Mcgill, confirm that the lecture was indeed held as scheduled, debunking the false claims of its cancellation. We strongly urge you to correct this error and issue a clarification that the McGill lecture was indeed held as planned, ensuring accuracy in your reporting."

Dear Mr. Baff and Mr. Roberts,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) to bring to your attention a factual inaccuracy in the National Post article titled “UN Palestine official says Israeli soldiers are 'wilful executioners of an extermination plan'” published on November 6, 2024.

The article incorrectly states, "On Monday, Albanese’s lecture at the McGill University law school about international law and genocide was cancelled." In fact, Albanese’s lecture was not canceled, but instead relocated.

On November 1, 2024, Neil Oberman sent a letter to McGill’s President Deep Saini, demanding the cancellation of the event. Following this, the Dean imposed unreasonable conditions, including rescheduling the event to 7:30 PM or moving it online, which appeared to be an effort to cancel it. Law Students for Palestine at McGill pressed the administration for clarification, emphasizing the importance of the event for free academic discussion. Despite initial pushback, the administration ultimately moved the event to a new location on campus, though a smaller and less suitable venue was initially proposed.

All of the above is laid out clearly by the Law Students for Palestine at McGill’s online testimony.

Several tweets about the event, along with a statement from Law Students for Palestine at Mcgill, confirm that the lecture was indeed held as scheduled, debunking the false claims of its cancellation.

We strongly urge you to correct this error and issue a clarification that the McGill lecture was indeed held as planned, ensuring accuracy in your reporting.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

We look forward to your prompt response and the necessary correction.

Best regards,
Lynn Naji
