Re: “Canada in the world and the war in Gaza” by Nelson Wiseman in The Hill Times on January 20, 2025.
I was frankly surprised and disappointed to see this article in The Hill Times. It rivals The Toronto Sun in its hysterical inaccuracies and promotion of racism.
Mr. Wiseman floods the reader with conjecture, half-truths and inaccurate statements to ring the Chicken Little alarm: "The sky is falling!". And of course it's all connected to the same old boogeymen: Arabs, China, Iran and the new kid on the block, India.
For instance: "No Jew has been charged in the spate of Islamophobic incidents since the Gaza war began, while some Arabs have been charged with antisemitic crimes".
Absolutely not true. Toronto Neighbourhood Awash In Anti-Palestinian Racism
Opinion articles have a lot of room for divisive rhetoric, but they must still adhere to basic facts and be checked. Clearly The Hill Times did not bother, or did not want to bother, fact checking this lie. This should be corrected immediately and prominently.
As the vast majority of the planet has seen over 15 painful months the real problem is Israel and the United States, not the ordinary and diverse group of people (including many Jews) rising up to stop the genocide and Israel’s apartheid regime.
By publishing this op-ed, Mr. Wiseman is signalling that he supports this genocide that most of the planet condemns. He has not a whit of concern for Palestinian suffering and seemingly does not see the Palestinians as fully equal to himself or even fully human.
Now that there is a ceasefire in Gaza, Israel is aggressively accelerating the same policies of violence, domination and humiliation in the West Bank while they steal more land.
To anyone with a moral compass the situation is crystal clear – there is nothing on this earth that justifies this behaviour. Wiseman tries to invert this reality and in the process has damaged The Hill Times’ credibility. Such hateful rhetoric does not deserve to be published by a reputable paper.
