Hudson’s Bay Refuses to Oppose Anti-Palestinian Racism

Despite the serious ethical violations of journalistic standards outlined below, Hudson’s Bay continues to support National Post through its advertising dollars. This directly contradicts the company’s corporate commitments to integrity, diversity, and ethical business practices, as manifest in its "Charter for Change" mandate. CJPME’s media team has repeatedly urged Hudson’s Bay to review its advertising partnership with Postmedia and National Post, yet the company has failed to take any meaningful action.

Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is calling on Hudson’s Bay Company to immediately end its advertising partnership with National Post following the newspaper’s continued publication of racist and untrustworthy propaganda from the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS). The JNS is a news wire service that promotes Israeli propaganda that dehumanizes Palestinians and whitewashes Israeli war crimes.

Since Hudson’s Bay continues to financially support a media outlet that publishes racist, far-right misinformation, we ask media responders to engage with Hudson’s Bay’s media and corporate social responsibility team to pressure them into reviewing their relationship with the National Post.

We also ask that media responders boycott Hudson’s Bay until it withdraws its advertising from National Post. Media responders should make it clear that failure to respond or hold accountability for supporting this rhetoric will mean formal complains with Canadian media regulators such as the National News Media Council to investigate National Post’s breach of journalistic ethics.

  • The article falsely labels all released Palestinian detainees as “terrorists”, despite the fact that many are political prisoners, children, and civilians held under Israel’s illegal practice of administrative detention. Amnesty International has condemned Israel’s use of administrative detention as a violation of international law, but this context is omitted. The release of 641 detainees on Thursday, including more than 450 who arrived in the besieged and bombarded Gaza Strip, took place following yet another Israeli delay and after Hamas handed over the remains of four Israeli captives. Yet here in the National Post it is framed as an exchange of "terrorists.” This is disturbingly racist and dehumanizing towards the Palestinians of Gaza.
  • The JNS continuously refers to the occupied West Bank as “Judea and Samaria,” a biblical, politically charged term used by far-right pro-Israel groups to justify annexation and settlement expansion. It is inappropriate for media outlets to be using these terms. Using this term is not neutral—it’s a deliberate editorial choice that erases Palestinian history.
  • The article states that Israel held up the release of Palestinian prisoners due to Hamas’s “televised stunts”, but it omits Israel’s own propaganda tactics. This is a small example of the double standards that run rampant in JNS content. Such selective criticism reinforces Israeli victimhood while dehumanizing Palestinians.
