"Once again, I thank you for publishing this article, and I encourage the CBC to continue to highlight the horrific impacts of Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza on Palestinians, as we work to collectively draw attention to voices, perspectives and movements that are often sidelined in Canadian mainstream media."

Dear Shlok Talati, Basem Boshra and Paul Moore,
I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express my appreciation regarding the article titled “'Bombs just started to rain down': Saskatoon nurse recounts working in Gaza when Israel broke ceasefire” published on May 27, 2025.
I very much appreciate that your article highlights, with balance and detail, the challenges and injustices faced by Palestinian civilians and health workers due to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The article also acknowledges “the decades-long conflict” and that “Israel broke a fragile ceasefire”, which provides the reader with important context for the current situation. The article helps Canadian readers relate to the distressing situation in Gaza by providing first-hand perspective from a Canadian health worker who treated patients there recently, on two occasions, as well as accounts from the Canadian NGO Doctors Without Borders.
That said, midway through the article, it is mentioned that "Eberl said she saw a spike in the number of patients with blast injuries, infectious diseases and malnutrition because of a lack of access to clean water”. Here, to ensure accuracy as per CBC’s “Journalistic Standards and Practices”, the author could correct/expand on Eberl’s statement by directly attributing the causes of “blast injuries, infectious diseases and malnutrition” to a broader set of actions by Israel: in addition to Israeli military actions that disproportionately kill Palestinian civilians, Israel has blocked access to humanitarian assistance such as life saving food, nutrition and medical supplies, and has also deliberately cut off electricity, fuel, and access to clean water to Palestinians in Gaza.
Once again, I thank you for publishing this article, and I encourage the CBC to continue to highlight the horrific impacts of Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza on Palestinians, as we work to collectively draw attention to voices, perspectives and movements that are often sidelined in Canadian mainstream media.
Sincerely,
Alison Jenkins
