Concerns over radio broadcast on Gaza

"The omission of this context from your reporting leaves viewers with a distorted impression of the situation. I respectfully ask that your editorial team ensures that future radio broadcasts on Gaza give greater voice to Palestinian civil institutions, such as the Tribal Affairs committee for better journalistic balance and perspectives."

Dear CBC Morning Live Editorial Team,

I am writing to express concern regarding the framing used in a recent segment on your broadcast that reported on aid distribution and violence which aired today June 27th at  07:08 a.m. on CBC Morning Live with Heather Hiscox. While the piece conveyed important information about the dire situation in Gaza, I believe important perspectives were missing from the segment.

The segment included unqualified Israeli claims that aid was being “redirected from gangs and looters” and that “Hamas and other criminal elements” were siphoning off humanitarian supplies. However, the role of local actors in Gaza, particularly the Higher Committee for Tribal Affairs who denounced Israel for manufacturing these claims was excluded. The committee rejected claims of aid diversion and emphasized that distribution efforts are conducted under its direct supervision in partnership with international organizations, not with factions such as Hamas. Their full statement, published in Safa News, calls on the UN Security Council to immediately investigate the aid distribution process, which they qualify as “death traps,” and to also verify its transparency and legitimacy. They further denounce the Israeli allegations as a political fabrication aimed at justifying attacks on civilians and undermining local humanitarian efforts.

The omission of this context from your reporting leaves viewers with a distorted impression of the situation. I respectfully ask that your editorial team ensures that future radio broadcasts on Gaza give greater voice to Palestinian civil institutions, such as the Tribal Affairs committee for better journalistic balance and perspectives.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Anthony Issa
