Context needed: Israel is blocking aid from entering Gaza

"The passive language used, and lack of attribution to particular actors, make this part of the article misleading and unfair. Not including or acknowledging this evidence and additional context constitutes a serious omission, obscuring the extent and causes of the atrocities against Palestinians."

July 9, 2025

Dear CBC editorial team,

I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express concern regarding the article titled “With her husband trapped in Gaza, this St. John's woman is pleading for a quick evacuation” published on July 9, 2025 on the CBC News website.

I’d like to first express appreciation for the article’s highlighting of Palestinian and allied voices, and also for emphasizing criticism of Canada's temporary residency program for Palestinians.

However, in stating “Gaza currently has a limited aid supply. And when food and essentials do get in, Palestinians risk their lives to access it. Hundreds have been killed trying to reach distribution sites.”, the article fails to provide extremely important context: that Israel has been disrupting aid supplies, and that both the Israeli Defence Forces and US security contractors have been deliberately shooting at unarmed Palestinians waiting for food aid.

The passive language used, and lack of attribution to particular actors, make this part of the article misleading and unfair. Not including or acknowledging this evidence and additional context constitutes a serious omission, obscuring the extent and causes of the atrocities against Palestinians.

Please update the article to be accurate and fair on this situation.

Thanks in advance for making the above important change, and I hope that the CBC will also ensure full, fair, and proper presentation in future coverage.

Sincerely,

Alison Jenkins
