Yesterday, Israel murdered Anas al-Sharif in a targeted strike on a clearly identified media tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Also killed were reporter Mohammed Qreiqeh, videographers Moamen Aliwa and Ibrahim Zaher, camera operator Mohammed Noufal, and Anas’ nephew Mosaab Sharif.

National Post published an article about the story by the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS). If you're not familiar, CJPME has complained about several JNS articles in Canadian media. JNS functions as if an amplifier for Israeli military claims. They operate not on the basis of fair and honest journalism, but for the purpose of promoting Israeli narratives around the world.

This piece justified Anas’ killing by falsely branding him a “terrorist Hamas leader.” This dangerous smear was published in numerous Postmedia owned papers across the country. Join our collective media advocacy efforts to hold the National Post accountable for spreading disinformation that legitimizes the killing of Palestinian journalists.

  • The piece falsely states (presenting fabricated accusations as fact) that Anas was “a journalist for the Qatari Al Jazeera network but was actively serving as the head of a Hamas terrorist cell.” This is a completely unproven fabrication by Israel, and in parroting it, the National Post is spreading false misinformation. Al Jazeera confirmed that Anas had no affiliation with Hamas.
  • By invoking the word “terrorist,” the piece legitimizes Israel’s killing of a Palestinian journalist. Under international law, deliberately targeting members of the press in a war zone is a war crime. By spreading these manufactured lies, the National Post—and every paper that reprinted this piece—is complicit in normalizing Israel’s execution of every remaining voice in Gaza that dares expose the truth to the world.
  • Feel free to raise additional concerns with this piece. We strongly urge you to take action as Anas’ final words before he was martyred were: “I entrust you with Palestine—the jewel in the crown of the Muslim world, the heartbeat of every free person in this world.” Peace be upon him, and all the martyrs.

If you are unsatisfied with National Post's response to your complaint, you may consider filing a formal complaint with the National NewsMedia Council. Instructions are here.
