Re: “Media must care not to echo propaganda”

To the Hamilton Spectator team,

I am deeply concerned that the Hamilton Spectator chose to publish Gustavo Rymberg’s opinion piece accusing your paper of “echoing Hamas propaganda.” In doing so, the Spectator has in fact allowed misinformation to be spread.

The article parrots Israel’s unproven claim that Al Jazeera journalists were Hamas operatives, a baseless accusation that dishonours martyred reporters like Anas al-Sharif, who was confirmed by Al Jazeera to have no Hamas ties. It also deflects accountability by comparing Gaza to other conflicts, misuses the charge of antisemitism to silence criticism of the state of Israel, and undermines the very principle of press freedom it claims to defend.

The Hamilton Spectator must not allow, even under the banner of “opinion,” misinformation to be given legitimacy. Palestinian journalists who have been executed by Israel, like Anas al Sharif, peace be upon him and all martyrs, deserve better.
