Feedback Re: From Gaza to Calgary

Dear Ms. Rukhsar and Mr. Boshra,

On behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) I am writing to express appreciation for your recent article, From Gaza to Calgary: Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer reflects on life in a war zone and in his new home that was posted online on August 26, 2025.

Your article captured the story of the Zakot family‘s relocation to and resettlement in Canada along with the tension of his work in Gaza as a photojournalist and his worry about the safety of his family.

As you know, Israel has banned international media from entering Gaza, leaving Palestinian journalists as the only source of news. We are dependent on them to document and report what is happening on a daily basis.

For that reason, my one critique of your article is that you did not include any mention of the five journalists that were killed at Nasser hospital the day before your article was published. I urge you to add this reference of the latest killings to your article. This addition will support why Ahmed chose to relocate to Canada and why reporting in Gaza continues to be a dangerous if not deadly assignment for Palestinian journalists.

Thank you for considering my request and I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Debbie Hubbard
