Lack of context about coverage of hostage/detainee exchange

In terms of ceasefire violations your report makes it seem like both sides are equally at fault. This is not accurate or fair. Israel has overwhelmingly violated the ceasefire agreement and continues to do so. In fact, during the current “ceasefire” and previous ones, Israel has never stopped killing Palestinians. How many Israeli civilians has Hamas killed during this ceasefire agreement? We all know the answer and it speaks volumes.

Dear Editors and Producers of Global Winnipeg News,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) with thanks for the news segment broadcast on November 4 at approximately 7:10 AM.

Once again, Israel has made outlandish justifications for killing Palestinians, and it is refreshing to hear in your report that they “did not provide any evidence” for this claim. In fact, this has been their pattern for so long it’s puzzling why anyone would bother giving them airtime. It should also be noted that the Palestinian “terrorists” (according to Israel) were unarmed civilians.

Later in the piece you mention the death toll  - 3 Israeli soldiers are mentioned after “over 200” Palestinians deaths are cited. There are reports that the Israeli soldiers were not killed by Hamas but by their own unexploded ordnance. Even so, the killing of over 200 people “in retaliation” for the deaths of 3 soldiers speaks to the asymmetry and cruelty of this nightmare.

Also to be commended is the line, “Israel returned the bodies of 45 Palestinians it had killed.” So often in news reports we hear that Palestinians simply “die” or “are killed” but the author of their deaths goes unnamed.

I know it is not possible to include every detail in every story but I have a couple points of critical feedback for you.

There are several mentions of Israel's perspective throughout this piece. “Israel says” or “Israeli claims.” What of the Palestinian perspective?  What does Hamas say? This perspective is available and is an essential part of the story - a story that has two sides.
