Beyond the lack of context, the announcer’s tone is dismissive and disturbingly jovial for a segment about a two-year genocidal siege. The whole thing is a masterclass in whitewashing crime. Shameful.
Dear CTV Vancouver (CIVT) Producers,
I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding a segment that aired on CTV Vancouver (CIVT) — CTV Your Morning (Thursday, December 11, 2025, 08:15). Although the segment was brief, lasting a mere 22 seconds, the announcer managed to turn what is a significant political statement by Iceland in protest of a genocide into a light entertainment piece about how much Icelanders love to watch Eurovision but never win.
These five countries, including Iceland, Spain, Slovenia, Ireland and the Netherlands have specifically cited Israel’s genocidal war on Palestinians in Gaza as the reason for their boycott of Eurovision. Using the word “actions” instead of naming the war crimes the UN has stated Israel is plausibly committing shields Israel from responsibility for mass starvation, forced displacement and the wholesale slaughter of tens of thousands of defenseless civilians. It also shields the Canadian public from the truth.
Beyond the lack of context, the announcer’s tone is dismissive and disturbingly jovial for a segment about a two-year genocidal siege. The whole thing is a masterclass in whitewashing crime. Shameful.
CTV Vancouver needs to do better.
