To the CJOB Editorial team,
I am writing regarding a segment on the Ben Mulroney show which aired on September 29th at 12:00 AM. The portion in question regards the Canadian government's distribution of foreign aid.
The segment is riddled with false numbers and hysterical claims which are then used to foment outrage and resentment amongst CJOB listeners. What is the source of the numbers quoted by Ben Mulroney and his guest, Tom Korski? Official government sources contradict everything they are saying about the Ukraine and Palestine in regards to aid amounts.
It is a severe violation of broadcast ethics when a platform is provided for a host and guest that have no idea what they are talking about. Of course they are entitled to their opinions but these must be based in fact, not wild conjecture.
In keeping with standards of basic accuracy we would like to know the source of their numbers please.
Especially problematic is their characterization of UNRWA as a corrupt institution, along with false accusations of "terrorist infiltration” and our money going to “terrorists to build tunnels or buy guns”. Statements like this are simply ignorant schoolyard lies. This is irresponsible and dangerous rhetoric that is meant to create fear and should not be permitted in the public domain.
According to UNRWA themselves, they have not received any specific allegations regarding systemic diversion of aid in Gaza by Hamas or other armed groups. UNRWA's distribution of aid is implemented through a robust system of oversight and checks, ensuring the safety and appropriate use of the aid.
In 2010, Canada significantly reduced its aid to UNRWA, cutting back from over $34 million in 2007. This decision was part of a broader pattern during the Harper administration, which included cutting funding to various Canadian non-governmental organizations, particularly those addressing issues related to Israel and Palestine. These actions were politically motivated, aiming to align with pro-Israel foreign policy stances by the Conservative government in the Middle East. The Liberal government restored funding in 2016 precisely because UNRWA is essential for humanitarian aid and operates under strict oversight.
Many countries, including Canada, Spain and Norway, have resumed their funding after reviewing the available evidence and concluding that Israel’s claims lacked sufficient, if any, proof. This baseless attack is a gross misrepresentation of the agency and a clear example of anti-Palestinian racism.
Will CJOB and the Ben Mulroney show commit to fact checking their “claims” and behaving more responsibly to show respect for facts and their listeners in the future?
How about acknowledging UNRWA for helping millions of people with their life-saving work even under appalling and life-threatening conditions.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Jeff Winch, CJPME Media Analyst.
