October 19th Op-ed

Your article claims that Pro-Palestinian protestors have substituted the word “Zionist” for “Jew” to hide their racism. Do you have any examples of this practice or any evidence at all? Or is this another hysterical “interpretation” of events?

To the Toronto Sun newsroom,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) regarding your article “Feds waffling on ‘anti-Zionism’”  published on October 19, 2026 in the Toronto Sun.

This op-ed uses disingenuous interpretations of both Zionism and the Canadian government's position on Zionism to try and foment fear and outrage amongst its readers.

At the Toronto Sun, not only is criticism of Israel anti-semitic but now, criticism of Zionism is also anti-semitic. Interpretations like this are trying to do nothing more than silence debate and free speech. Jewish groups and many prominent Jews themselves are publicly anti-zionist.

Your article claims that Pro-Palestinian protestors have substituted the word “Zionist” for “Jew” to hide their racism. Do you have any examples of this practice or any evidence at all? Or is this another hysterical “interpretation” of events?

The following line is an example of an attempt to sound reasonable and portray Israel as a victim being picked upon.

“Criticism of Israel or Israeli government policies is not antisemitic as long as Israel is being judged by the same standards applied to other countries.”

Most countries use international law as the standard to judge the behaviour of nation states. Unfortunately no other country except Israel has committed a sadistic genocide that started three years ago and continues to this day. Does the Sun apply the same standards (defence of genocide) to any country besides Israel?

The red herring argument the article mentions is best exemplified by this very same article. It is using anti-semitism to distract your readers from the central issue, Israel's ongoing atrocities in Gaza and the West Bank.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Jeff Winch, CJPME Media Analyst
