In fact, since October 2025, mainstream media language has increasingly relied on euphemisms that manufacture the appearance of a meaningful ceasefire in Gaza where none exists.
To the CBC and Associated Press,
I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (www.cjpme.org) to express concern regarding the headline of the article titled “Israeli strikes kill at least 30 Palestinians, as Gaza ceasefire inches forward” published on January 31, 2026.
The headline mentions that Israeli strikes have killed at least 30 Palestinians, while mentioning afterwards that the ceasefire in Gaza is inching forward.
A ceasefire, as defined by Doctors Without Borders, is “an agreement that regulates the cessation of all military activity for a given length of time in a given area.” By definition, a ceasefire implies an end to violence.
That is not the reality in Gaza.
What is being described as a ceasefire no longer meets the definition of the term. Israeli air and artillery attacks have continued across occupied Gaza, violating the ceasefire agreement at least 1,450 times between October 10, 2025, and January 31, 2026 during which at least 526 Palestinians have been killed and 1,447 injured according to Al Jazeera.
In fact, since October 2025, mainstream media language has increasingly relied on euphemisms that manufacture the appearance of a meaningful ceasefire in Gaza where none exists.
In the interest of fair, accurate, and responsible journalism, as outlined by the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), the headline should explicitly mention Israel’s ongoing ceasefire violations. We therefore recommend revising it to:
“Israeli strikes kill at least 30 Palestinians, as Israel violates ceasefire agreement.”
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your response.
