Lack of context about Israel's strike in Bekaa

Without this crucial context, readers are left without the information necessary to form an accurate assessment of the so-called ceasefire. We therefore urge you, at minimum, to note that since the November 27, 2024 agreement, there have been over 12,000 documented Israeli violations, just as you chose to highlight Hezbollah’s claimed strike. Presenting only one side of post-ceasefire is an incomplete narrative.

To the CBC News and Associated Press,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (www.cjpme.org) regarding the Associated Press article published by CBC News on February 21, 2026 titled: Israeli strikes in eastern Lebanon kill 8 Hezbollah members, 2 others: officials.”

The article notes that “Hezbollah has claimed one strike against Israel since the ceasefire,” yet it fails to provide essential context. Since the ceasefire agreement was signed on November 27, 2024, there have been over 12,000 documented Israeli violations. This context is critical, as the Israeli military has been carrying out near-daily attacks in south Lebanon since November 2024.

Moreover, Israel continues to occupy five points within Lebanese territory and has obstructed the reconstruction of several border villages, preventing tens of thousands of displaced Lebanese residents from returning home. Israel is also reportedly holding a dozen Lebanese prisoners and detainees, including both Hezbollah fighters and civilians taken from their border villages in 2024.

Second, the article mentions that “after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel triggered war in Gaza, Hezbollah began firing rockets from Lebanon into Israel in support of Hamas and the Palestinians.” This framing lacks critical context. Hezbollah’s involvement should not be reduced to “supporting Hamas” without acknowledging the broader geopolitical context of why it started engaging in the first place.

Palestinians have been enduring what United Nations experts have described as a genocide. In fact Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently subject to International Criminal Court arrest warrants for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the use of starvation as a weapon of war by blocking humanitarian aid from entering Gaza for months. In the name of fair, accurate, and balanced reporting, in line with CAJ guidelines, this is crucial context that should be added to help readers understand the motivations behind Hezbollah’s involvement and the geopolitical context at large, which were undertaken in solidarity with Palestinians enduring Israel’s genocide.
