Misleading framing regarding escalation in Lebanon

The claim that Lebanon was “dragged into this war” is therefore misleading, as the Israeli forces had already been conducting near-daily airstrikes in the south. I also write in good faith and from lived experience. My family, like many other Lebanese families, has been affected by Israel’s ceasefire violations since November 2024.

To the CBC Newsroom,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East regarding the CBC article titled: “Blockade on Iran will continue, Trump says, after Iran says it will reopen Strait of Hormuz.”

The article states that Lebanon was drawn into the war when Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel on March 2, in solidarity with Iran following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini in U.S. - Israeli attacks on February 28, 2026.

However, this framing omits critical context necessary for readers to understand the broader geopolitical dynamics at play. The framing also constructs a false starting point for the escalation.

From November 2024 to March 1, 2026, Israel carried out daily aerial strikes in the south of Lebanon, targeted assassinations, and the occupation of five strategic points. The ceasefire was violated over 10,000 documented times. Over 300 Lebanese were killedAt no point was there a genuine ceasefire; rather, what existed functioned as “ceasefire warfare,” serving as a cover for ongoing artillery shelling.

Lastly, I understand that not all context can be included in an article. However, in adherence to the principle of accuracy in responsible journalism, the article should be revised to include Israel’s repeated ceasefire violations over the past year and a half, reflecting that hostilities have not meaningfully ceased since 2024. Otherwise, as written, the article constructs a false starting point for the escalation.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
