Request for editorial review of "Canada’s Antisemitism Crisis"

While the columnist is entitled to their own opinion, when that opinion steps into the realm of dangerously conflating criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian human rights with antisemitism, while relying on statistics grounded in flawed methodology, ibecomes an inflammatory attempt to weaponize the very real fight against antisemitism in order to silence any advocacy for Palestine under the guise of fair commentary.

To the Ottawa Life Magazine,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East to raise several concerns regarding the opinion piece titled: “Canada’s Antisemitism Crisis: How the Liberal Government Failed Jewish Canadians.”

The piece relies on antisemitism statistics from the pro-Israel lobby group B’nai Brith Canada, condemns the CBC as being inherently antagonistic toward Jews, and claims that unions engaging in advocacy against Israel’s genocide in Gaza are promoting “hate-filled rhetoric echoing antisemitic tropes.”

Opinion writing does not exempt columnists from basic standards of responsible journalism. While the columnist is entitled to their own opinion, when that opinion steps into the realm of dangerously conflating criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian human rights with antisemitism, while relying on statistics grounded in flawed methodology, it becomes an inflammatory attempt to weaponize the very real fight against antisemitism in order to silence any advocacy for Palestine under the guise of fair commentary.

The first issue concerns the piece’s reliance on B’nai Brith Canada for its reporting on antisemitism. However, B’nai Brith has a well-documented history of conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism.

The images below are taken from previous B’nai Brith reports on “antisemitism” :

2021: Labeling criticism of Israel as antisemitic, despite the fact that every single international human rights organization from Human Rights Watch to Amnesty International have characterized Israel’s policies toward Palestinians as apartheid. Notwithstanding the world’s highest court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in its landmark 2024 advisory opinion has concluded that Israel’s policy measures violate the international prohibition on racial segregation and apartheid.

2022: Mislabelling graffiti with a Palestinian flag and the phrase “Palestine - from the river to the sea.” This phrase is a common expression of Palestinian liberation - it does not equate to hatred toward Jewish people.

Concerns about the methodology and accuracy of B'nai Brith's reporting are also not new. Scholars such as Robert Brym from the University of Toronto and Rhona Lenton from York University have highlighted this issue. Their study of B’nai Brith’s 2022 report points out that it “lumps together under the rubric of antisemitism actions that are antisemitic with various types of action that are critical of Israel,” urging readers to “temper our alarm” over the findings.

Furthermore, Sheryl Nestel’s 2021 report for Independent Jewish Voices highlights what it describes as B’nai Brith’s biased methodology in its antisemitism reports, concluding that “B’nai Brith Canada cannot be understood as a neutral source for reporting on the nature and scope of antisemitism in Canada.”

In light of this, I ask Ottawa Life Magazine to reconsider publishing an op-ed that relies on B’nai Brith Canada as a neutral source on antisemitism, particularly given that  B'nai Brith Canada openly describes itself as a self-professed staunch defender of the State of Israel and a pro-Israel advocacy organization. At minimum, readers should be made aware of the significant criticism surrounding B’nai Brith’s methodology.

Second, the opinion piece claims that the CBC, as a publicly funded broadcaster, has allowed “an ideological hostility toward Jews to take root and shape its reporting.”

The CBC has been one of the very few major Canadian media outlets that has consistently platformed Palestinian voices and perspectives since Israel’s genocide started on Gaza in 2023. To suggest that providing space for Palestinian perspectives constitutes an inherent hatred towards Jews is unfair, and again is but an attempt at silencing any kind of reporting on Palestine.

Granted that opinion writing allows opinion, it must still adhere to basic standards of accuracy, fairness, and responsible commentary expected of Canadian media outlets. This opinion piece falls short of that standard.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to your response.
