There can be no lasting peace in the region as long as the Israeli military violates international law with impunity.
Dear CBC news,
Thank you for your article “Lebanon fighting eases after US-Iran deal but displaced warned not to rush home.”
Statements by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz that Israel plans to occupy southern Lebanon “indefinitely,” and that the zone would be cleared of local residents, is a blatant admission of Israel’s policies of ethnic cleansing. Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese have been forced to flee north and are now refugees in their own country. Many have nowhere to return to, since Israel has burned their villages to the ground.
As you point out, the Israeli military has been razing villages in southern Lebanon for weeks. The destruction of civilian homes and essential infrastructure such as medical centres is a war crime according to International Humanitarian law and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. https://www.icc-cpi.int/sites/default/files/2024-05/Rome-Statute-eng.pdf
There can be no lasting peace in the region as long as the Israeli military violates international law with impunity.
