I'm writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express our appreciation regarding the article "Boy, 10, among at least 10 Palestinians killed in Israeli strike, gunfire in Gaza: officials", published by CBC News on July 14, 2026.

We were glad to see a headline that clearly names both Israel as the party that carried out the strike and the Palestinian identity of those killed: "Boy, 10, among at least 10 Palestinians killed in Israeli strike, gunfire in Gaza." Coverage of these events too often relies on passive or agent-less constructions, such as "10 killed in strikes," that leave readers unsure of who acted and who was harmed. Your headline does neither. It states plainly who carried out the strike and identifies those killed as Palestinian, giving readers an accurate starting point for understanding the story.

We also want to acknowledge the care CBC brought to this story. Your videographer gathered the words of Muataz Abu Shaar's aunt, Nawal Abu Shaar, who asked whether her ten-year-old nephew,  shot while playing, did not have "a right to live." Centering the voice of a Palestinian family and naming the child rather than leaving him a statistic gives readers the human reality behind the numbers. The article's use of an independent source, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), on the pattern of children wounded by Israeli fire further strengthened that reporting.

We appreciate this clarity in naming who was killed and by whom, and in centring the people affected, and we encourage you to hold to this standard in your continued coverage of Gaza.
