I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East to thank you for your article titled, “United Church defends museum’s Nakba exhibit amid backlash.” We greatly appreciate the focus it brings to the range of voices supporting this important exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.
The statement from Rubin Kantorovich is particularly important, specifically his categorial assertion that what the exhibit presents is “irrefutable.” It is indeed beyond reasonable debate whether Palestinians were ethnically cleansed during the process of Israel’s founding, and we are grateful to you for not imitating coverage elsewhere that suggests there is some genuine controversy as to whether the Nakba happened.
The one suggestion we might have for future coverage of this nature is to give voice to Palestinians themselves. It is certainly vital to show that Palestinians have allies, but also to let them speak for themselves. Given your publication’s spiritual focus, that could take the form of a discussion with a Palestinian imam or priest who can relate what this pathbreaking exhibit means to their people, whose suffering has been ignored for far too long.
