I am writing to you on behalf of CJPME to express concern about a segment broadcast on CBC Radio One on August 9, 2026, 05:23 A.M., as part of The New Yorker Radio Hour, concerning a New York congressional candidate.
During the segment, the host asks the candidate wether they would have attended an October 8 "pro-Palestinian, pro-Hamas rally,” adding that many people saw the rally as a justification for the deaths of Israelis on October 7.
CJPME believes this framing is deeply problematic.
Describing the demonstration simply as a “pro-Hamas rally” because it supported pro-Palestine beliefs does not, by itself, establish that it was pro-Hamas. The segment does not explain what evidence supports the characterization, who organized the demonstration, whether Hamas was explicitly endorsed by organizers or participants, or whether the DSA candidate herself expressed support for Hamas.
Furthermore, this framing perpetuates anti-Palestinian racism as outlined by the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association. Framing activism around Palestine self-determination as inherently linked to militant groups such as Hamas perpetuates anti-Palestinian rhetoric.
This is particularly concerning given CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices stated frame its principles around accuracy, integrity, balance, impartiality and fairness in its journalism.
I recognize that The New Yorker Radio Hour is produced by The New Yorker rather than CBC. However, CBC nevertheless made the editorial decision to carry the program on CBC Radio One. The fact that the segment originated with an external producer does not eliminate CBC's responsibility for the material it broadcasts to Canadian audiences.
I therefore encourage CBC to review this segment under its Journalistic Standards and Practices. At minimum, CBC should assess whether it was appropriate to characterize the demonstration as “pro-Hamas” without sufficient evidence or attribution.
