"By failing to characterize such remarks as racist, or genocidal, and normalizing them as merely inflammatory, CBC fails to inform its viewers of the calculated seriousness of Israel’s genocide in Palestine, its final solution for the Palestinian population it controls."
Dear CBC News Network Toronto Producers,
I am writing to express serious concern regarding the journalistic framing during your coverage of the Gaza peace negotiations on Monday, August 17, 2026 (approx. 8:15 AM).
During the broadcast, Mark Carcasole and Crystal Goomansingh characterized statements by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on a podcast episode as merely "hawkish" and "inflammatory."
To be clear, Minister Ben-Gvir’s actual comments called for the execution of dozens of Gazans every night regardless of threat level on the grounds that “they are not worthy of life.” Such remarks are far more than inflammatory or hawkish.
This is anti-Palestinian rhetoric that dehumanizes the people of Gaza. This form of justification of violence against Palestinians according to the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association also qualifies as anti-Palestinian racism.
By failing to characterize such remarks as racist, or genocidal, and normalizing them as merely inflammatory, CBC fails to inform its viewers of the calculated seriousness of Israel’s genocide in Palestine, its final solution for the Palestinian population it controls.
CBC is expected to be accurate under its Journalistic Standards and Practices. Yet this segment sanitizes explicit calls for mass violence.
I urge CBC News to ensure future reporting uses clear, precise, and objective language when reporting on statements like those of Ben-Gvir which advocate for mass killings.
Sincerely,
Tim McCaskell
