Even in a brief segment, the report would have been more accurate and balanced had it specified that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.
To the Global News Morning,
I am writing to you on behalf of Candians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East regarding the TV segment that aired today at 6:20:08 AM.
The segment reports that the Israeli government oversees a massive settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. However, the segment fails to mention that all Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. This has been repeatedly affirmed, most recently by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its 2024 advisory opinion, which held that (i) Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful, and (ii) Israel is under an obligation to end its unlawful occupation “as rapidly as possible.” This legal position has also been affirmed by the United Nations Security Council in 2016, the International Court of Justice in 2004, the International Committee of the Red Cross in 2019, and human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.Furthermore, the United Nations Security Council has adopted numerous resolutions affirming that Israeli settlements are illegal, including Resolution 2334 (2016), which declares that Israel’s settlement project has “no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace” [in Palestine/Israel].
Even in a brief segment, the report would have been more accurate and balanced had it specified that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.
Please keep this important context in mind in future reporting on Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.
Regards,
Media Analyst, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East
