Re Neil Herland Tweets

We are requesting that the Values and Ethics Commissioner investigate this concerning issue and make sure that Herland is held accountable to CBC's Code of Conduct, Social Media Guidance, and the JSP.

Dear CBC's Office of Values and Ethics,
I am writing to file a formal complaint on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) regarding social media activity by Neil Herland on X.

I believe that Herland's post, which was inaccurate, unfair, and misleading, not only constitutes a violation of the JSP, but of the Code of Conduct.

Herland claimed he was going to see a "guest speaker" who he described only as "an Australian-born university teacher who lives in Israel and once served as Israeli ambassador to the UK." But that guest speaker is Mark Regev, a former high ranking Israeli government official who regularly cheers on Israel's illegal aggressions and calls the genocide in Gaza a "victory." He is an extremely controversial figure and it is unclear why a CBC journalist would pay $180 for a ticket to this alarming political event. We believe even attending this event poses concerns about the Code of Conduct and its section on political activity.

Herland also claimed the event was at a "Toronto synonogue," but that is false. It was held at the Meridian Arts Centre, which you can see in the video and which is documented on the event page.
So the entire premise of the post, that he was being protested by pro-Palestine activists as he was trying to attend "synagogue services," is a harmful lie that perpetuates anti-Palestinian racism as defined by the ACLA.
It is important to note that he introduced his post by clarifying that he is "a journalist," and this is also reflected in the bio of his X page.
It is also highly alarming that Herland has revealed such severe bias, but never recused himself from known previous instances of interviewing guests about the subject. Here and here are are just two examples.
We are requesting that the Values and Ethics Commissioner investigate this concerning issue and make sure that Herland is held accountable to CBC's Code of Conduct, Social Media Guidance, and the JSP.
Sincerely,
Jason Toney
