"CTV’s coverage needs to cease casting doubt on the death toll in Gaza. CJPME demands that future coverage of the death toll be reported as widely recognized and reliable."
To CTV Winnipeg,
I am writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East regarding your radio segment that aired on CTV Winnipeg (CKY)-CTV Morning Live Winnipeg, Monday September 28, 2026.
Rather than simply reporting that the Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks on Gaza has surpassed 74 thousand, your segment attempts to discredit this statistic by casting disrepute on the credibility of the Gaza Health Ministry, and suggesting that many of those killed have been militants rather than civilians.
In doing so, you effectively echo Israeli war propaganda which seeks to characterize the death count as inflated by partisan (Hamas) sources, and insinuates that in any case, most of those killed have been legitimate enemy fighters.( For example, one Israeli mouthpiece, the Centre for New Middle East, suggests that since a plurality of those killed have been males between the ages of 15 and 45, that therefore, anyone within this demographic of "fighting-age men" must be a legitimate military target.)
On the contrary, NATO members and even Israel itself rely on the Gaza Ministry of Health’s data. Their intelligence services view the figures as generally accurate. Leaked intelligence indicates that the Israeli military itself estimated that, as of May 2025, fewer than 9,000 of the dead were members of the military wings of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. This amounts to 17 per cent of the total violently killed based on the official death toll at the time. Those figures would make the remaining 83% civilian deaths. This is why international human rights organizations and the UN describe the Israeli assault on Gaza as a genocide.
CTV’s coverage needs to cease casting doubt on the death toll in Gaza. CJPME demands that future coverage of the death toll be reported as widely recognized and reliable.
Sincerely
Tim McCaskell
