Feedback on article "Exclusive—Fake AI columnist dupes Canadian press to target Moroccan dissidents, and a Turkish 'middleman'"

"This piece clearly demonstrates how manipulative AI can be in the media and the dangers we face in Canada and globally from propaganda efforts, both now and in the future."

To Türkiye Today colleagues,

I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express appreciation for the article “Exclusive—Fake AI columnist dupes Canadian press to target Moroccan dissidents, and a Turkish 'middleman'” published yesterday by Türkiye Today.

The article was detailed and insightful, unpacking how “For nearly two years, an artificially generated persona operating under this name [Daniel Robson] successfully infiltrated several prominent Canadian news outlets and policy hubs”.

This piece clearly demonstrates how manipulative AI can be in the media and the dangers we face in Canada and globally from propaganda efforts, both now and in the future.

CJPME’s media accountability project was created to encourage Canadian media to provide professional and fair-minded coverage on the Middle East, especially Palestine-Israel.  The work of the MAP is based on professionally recognized journalistic ethics, as established by the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) and the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, which direct journalists at all levels to provide accurate, fair, independent, transparent and diverse coverage.

As such, CJPME would appreciate any advice or guidance on how organizations can spot these AI-generated journalists, so that we are better equipped to call them out.

Sincerely,

Alison Jenkins
