SaltWire misrepresents Palestinians killed by Israeli forces

As Israel steps up its attacks on the occupied West Bank, certain news outlets are reproducing the false statements of Israeli spokespeople about the casualties from Israel’s latest offensive. This paints a false picture in which Palestinian violence (rather than resistance) is said to have provoked assaults which were, in fact, taken on Israel’s initiative.

Poor coverage – Media outlet to be critiqued

As Israel steps up its attacks on the occupied West Bank, certain news outlets are reproducing the false statements of Israeli spokespeople about the casualties from Israel’s latest offensive. This paints a false picture in which Palestinian violence (rather than resistance) is said to have provoked assaults which were, in fact, taken on Israel’s initiative.

Notice the falsehood in this September 1 article written by a Reuters journalist and published by the Atlantic-Canadian news outlet, SaltWire, which describes those Palestinians who have recently fallen to Israeli occupation forces as “mainly gunmen or fighters”:

"Thousands of Palestinians have been arrested and hundreds have been killed since last year, mainly gunmen or fighters involved in clashes with Israeli troops but also including several uninvolved civilians."

This is worse than repeating false Israeli claims, in that the falsehood is here being reported as fact. According to a tally by the Associated Press, not even half of those whom Israel has killed can be credibly associated with so-called militant groups.

The descriptions from SaltWire/Reuters are false. Please join us in responding to editors at SaltWire and Reuters to make sure that the falsehood that the Palestinian fallen are “mainly gunmen or fighters” gets corrected immediately.  In your letter, feel free to cite articles that mention Israel's killing of Palestinian bystanders, children, etc. over the course of the past several months.  There are many, many examples to draw from.

Thank you!
