CBC shows double standard on political posters

However, when it comes to pro-Palestine posters in Montreal’s metro, it is reported only as a crime, only as “vandalism.” Hardly any context is given other than public condemnation.

CBC Montreal deserves criticism for the double standard in its reporting of pro-Palestine vs pro-Israel political posters.

Only a couple of weeks ago, CBC Montreal ran a story about how removing Israeli hostage posters in public places would be made a fineable offense in the suburb of Hamstead. The article interviewed Israel supporters and provided significant context.

However, when it comes to pro-Palestine posters in Montreal’s metro, it is reported only as a crime, only as “vandalism.” Hardly any context is given other than public condemnation.

Montreal's metro stations are occasionally marked with political posters or graffiti, but they only seem to attract such negative press when they are pro-Palestine. There are reports of many Israeli hostage posters being hung in ways that violate bylaws, but CBC has yet to report on those stories.

  • The journalist provides no valuable context about Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza.
  • The article focuses on how the pro-Palestine messaging was initially investigated as a hate crime, even though the initiative was promptly spiked after it became clear it was unnecessary.
  • The author says the “vandalism” comes at a time of “rising tensions” in Montreal, rather than civil disobedience at a time of an ongoing genocide against Palestinians.
  • The journalist makes no reference to the double standards surrounding pro-Palestine and pro-Israel messaging in Montreal.
