CTV National News thinks Palestine doesn't exist

A recent article from The Breach details the suppression of Palestinian voices at CTV, and this segment is further evidence of the rampant bias. CTV is systematically downplaying the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians and making efforts to diminish the notion of a Palestinian identity altogether.

Join us in critiquing CTV National News for continuing its severely one-sided coverage of Palestine. The episode aired on Wednesday, November 22.

A recent article from The Breach details the suppression of Palestinian voices at CTV, and this segment is further evidence of the rampant bias. CTV is systematically downplaying the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians and making efforts to diminish the notion of a Palestinian identity altogether.

There are many angles to take in criticizing this segment and demanding better, but here are some ideas.

  • The segment never uses the word “Palestine” or “Palestinian,” always instead referring to Gaza. CTV claimed in an internal memo that Palestine “does not currently exist.”
  • Israelis are interviewed at length throughout the segment, whereas we only hear two brief translated sentences spoken by Palestinians, both of whom are in the midst of crisis situations. Israelis are interviewed in calm settings and are able to define the narrative.
  • The segment focuses heavily on Israeli hostages, only making a brief aside about Palestinian prisoners, many of whom are held in administrative detention without access to a fair trial.
  • The segment refers to Palestinian “teenagers” held in Israeli prisoners, rather than calling them “children.” There are reports of 12-year-olds being held in Israeli detention.
