Please help us challenge CBC for its double standard when covering pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protests around the country.
The issue is the stark contrast between their coverage of the massive November 25 pro-Palestine protest on Parliament Hill versus the smaller December 4 pro-Israel rally at the same place.
- These protests were of equal importance for each side. Each rally was meant to represent the most significant collective display, inviting demonstrators nationwide to come together in Ottawa. Despite this, the pro-Palestine rally was given significantly less attention, even though it drew thousands more participants.
- CBC's coverage of the November 25 pro-Palestine rally was listed as local news, whereas the Israel protest was national news. This means the pro-Israel protest had much broader coverage.
- CBC wrote a significantly longer and more detailed article for the pro-Israel December 4 protest than for the November 25 pro-Palestine protest.
- In the pro-Israel protest article, the journalist doesn't mention the broader context of Israel's bombardment campaign against Gaza since October 7. This essential piece of information that he omits to mention overshadows Israel's responsibility for the killing of innocent Palestinian civilians
- CBC has covered many pro-Palestine rallies. They will likely use this as an excuse. It is, however, not acceptable to give such radically different coverage to such similar events.
